- Glossary of Horse Terms -
Colt - Uncastrated male horse under the age of four.
Dam - Mother of a horse.
Far side - The right side of a horse.
Filly - Female horse under the age of four.
Foal - Baby horse or pony of either gender not yet weaned (up to 1 yr. old).

Gelding - Castrated male horse.
Hand - Used to determine the height of a horse (1 hand = 10cm).
Mare - Female horse over the age of 4.
Near side - Left side of the horse (also the side you mount from).
Overo - The paint coat pattern having uneven/irregular splashes of white.
Pony - Small horse measuring 14.2 hands or less.
Sire - Father of a horse.
Stallion - A male horse four years old or older
Stud - A stallion used for breeding mares.
Tobiano - A coat pattern having smooth/regular patches of white.
Withers - Point at the bottom of the neck, usually characterized by a slightly raised area, just above the shoulders. A horse's height is measured from the ground to the withers.
Yearling - A horse
between one and two years of age.
